Hm.......
Just finished reading today's Montreal Gazette.
The "Fukyu Sushi Bar & Restaurant" owners were forced to change name of this eatery. The name was said to be in bad taste by a Quebec Superior Court judge.
----The owner of one long-standing company in the building, which has a business selling urns, said in a letter that while he found the name to be "highly amusing" on a personal level, it caused him professional problems given the sombre nature of his work.
"As we are in the funeral business, I am not so sure that giving directions to clients who have recently lost a loved one by telling them that we are "two doors down from Fukyu" will go down very well with them. ----(Paragraph copied from Gazette).

Hmmm. I'd have to see the written characters to be certain, but Fukyu could mean "happy water," which is quite charming. I wonder why nobody thought to change the spelling to reflect the actual pronunciation - Fookyou (oo as in foot). Missed opportunity, if you ask me.
Rouchswalwe: I had nothing else to post and the Gazette had no better online frontpage story. They changed the name to Kabuki, whatever that means if anything.
It's an interesting post. What happens when cultures merge and mix and the languages touch? Questions that have fascinated me for quite some time.
Kabuki is a type of Japanese theatre!
